Mal from the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, to go along with all the other Grisha pictures I've done recently. Probably the last in this set, now I've drawn all the main characters
I've never had a particularly clear mental image of Mal, so it took me a while to pin down what I wanted him to look like. I think this works, and is pretty much how I pictured him a lot of the time, though he probably should look a bit older/more rugged. His costume is way less complicated and detailed that everyone else’s, but I think it works. I went with a much more WW1 influenced look for him because that matches how I pictured the infantry uniforms, but I tried to work some older elements into the design seeing as the other uniforms I’ve drawn have been very 19th century.
Also had a bit of a panic about the tech-level of Ravka when I was drawing his rifle - I’ve completely forgotten whether they still used black powder weapons. I drew Nikolai with flintlocks, so I went with a rifled musket - I’m not sure if that’s accurate or not, but hopefully all the characters look like they’re from roughly the same time period.
